Staines Roadworks This Week: M25 J13 Slip Shut and No Trains

Most Staines roadworks are not really local. Spelthorne is four miles across at its widest and has a motorway on three sides of it, so what delays you here usually started somewhere else. The M25 runs down the western edge through junction 13 at Staines, the M3 starts at junction 1 at Sunbury, and Heathrow sits immediately north.

This weekend Staines has no trains again, on 10 and 11 October, and on the Sunday night National Highways shuts the M25 clockwise exit at junction 13. In the town centre, Cadent starts a fortnight of gas works on Guildford Street on Thursday 8 October, and the A308 at Sunbury closes eastbound overnight on three nights from the same day. Sunday night: the M25 exit at junction 13 is shut

From 10.30pm on Sunday 11 October to 5.30am on Monday 12 October, National Highways closes the M25 clockwise junction 13 exit slip road, for routine maintenance. That is the slip off the motorway at Staines for anyone coming up from the M3 and Chertsey. The diversion is “via National Highways roads”, which in practice means carrying on to junction 14 and coming back.

It overlaps another one. The M25 clockwise junction 11 exit slip at Chertsey is shut continuously from 8pm on Friday 9 October to 5am on Monday 12 October, for improvement works, so for the whole weekend you cannot leave the clockwise M25 at junction 11 either.

The railway: no trains at Staines this weekend

South Western Railway closes all lines between Feltham and Virginia Water and Windsor all weekend on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October:

• London Waterloo to Reading trains are diverted between Clapham Junction and Virginia Water, calling additionally at Surbiton and Weybridge. They miss Staines altogether.
• London Waterloo to Windsor services are diverted after Twickenham and terminate at Hounslow.
• Waterloo to Weybridge via Staines trains terminate at Hounslow.
• Buses run from Hounslow to Virginia Water and from Hounslow to Windsor, both via Staines, plus Hounslow to Woking on the Sunday.

After that, two of the next three weekends shut the line here again. The weekend of 17 and 18 October is clear at Staines, and the last closure in SWR’s published plan is the weekend of 31 October and 1 November. Its November page lists nothing else at Staines.

Two things in that table change what you should do.

The weekend of 24 and 25 October is the odd one. It is the only closed weekend where trains still start from Staines. On the Saturday an hourly Reading service begins here, and revised services run between Staines and Windsor and between Staines and Weybridge. Towards London you are on a bus, to Twickenham or to Hounslow. Waterloo to Windsor trains run only as far as Shepperton that weekend.

The Windsor branch closure is on weekdays. Monday 26 to Friday 30 October is half term. For those five days the line between Staines and Windsor is shut. Windsor trains are diverted after Staines and terminate at Ascot, and buses cover Staines to Windsor.

The motorways: our junctions this week

National Highways’ seven day closure report, last updated on 5 October, covers Monday 5 to Sunday 11 October. Every closure on the borough’s approaches is overnight or over the weekend:

• Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 October, 10pm to 5.30am. The M3 eastbound carriageway from junction 3 to junction 2, Bagshot to Thorpe, for routine maintenance.
• Wednesday 7 October, 10pm to 5.30am. The M25 clockwise junction 14 entry slip road at Stanwell Moor, for safety fence repairs. That is the way onto the M25 northbound from the Heathrow Terminal 4 junction.
• Thursday 8 October, 9pm to 6am. The M3 northbound junction 3 exit and entry slip roads at Bagshot, for maintenance. The southbound pair close on Friday 9 October, same hours.
• Friday 9 October, 8pm, to Monday 12 October, 5am. The M25 clockwise junction 11 exit slip road at Chertsey, continuously, for improvement works.
• Saturday 10 October, 10.30pm to 5am. The M3 eastbound junction 1 exit slip road at Sunbury, for urgent loop repairs, with a diversion via local authority roads.
• Sunday 11 October, 10.30pm to 5.30am. The M25 clockwise junction 13 exit slip road at Staines, set out above.

There is nothing in the report for the A30 near Staines or Egham, and no full closure on the M25 between junctions 12 and 15 this week. The report is republished twice a day on working days and adds nights between editions, so a closure that is not in it today can appear tomorrow.

Worth remembering before you plan round any of it: Stanwell Moor Road, the obvious local road between the motorway and Staines, has been dug up by Affinity Water since 1 April and is booked to stay that way until 4 December.

Staines town centre: Guildford Street from Thursday

Surrey’s register read on 6 October has booked start dates as late as 16 October, ten days ahead. Utility companies can notify the county up to two hours after emergency works start, so an empty forward list is never an empty fortnight.

The Staines jobs on it:

• Guildford Street: Cadent gas works, 8 to 22 October. This is the longest new job in the town centre.
• High Street: Affinity Water, 11 to 13 October.
• London Road: Surrey County Council minor works, 6 to 8 October.
• Kingston Road, the road to the station car park: Virgin Media, 8 and 9 October at the Staines South end, then Surrey County Council highway works from 16 to 25 October.
• Waters Drive: Virgin Media, 6 and 7 October. Nursery Gardens, Staines South: Virgin Media, 6 and 7 October. Edward Court, Staines South: BT, 6 to 9 October.
• Petersfield Road, Staines South: Affinity Water, 13 to 16 October. Elizabeth Avenue, Staines South: Surrey County Council, 14 and 15 October.
• Priory Green: Surrey County Council, to 13 November.

The register gives dates, a category and a promoter. It does not say whether a job uses lights, a lane closure or a full closure, so treat these as places to expect a dig rather than as closures.

Ashford and Stanwell

• Dane Road, Ashford: closed in the daytime this week. Surrey County Council made an order on 23 September closing Dane Road between the Dane Road access road and Saxon Road, for Affinity Water mains repairs, from 5 October. The register books the job to 9 October. The notice expects five days, 8am to 4pm, though the closure may operate 24 hours a day while signs are up. The diversion is Saxon Road, Elgin Avenue and Dane Road.
• Staines Road West at Ashford East and the Staines By-pass at Ashford Town: Surrey County Council, both 14 October, under one reference. Staines Road West at Ashford Common: 15 and 16 October.
• Chertsey Road, Ashford Common: Affinity Water, 15 to 20 October.
• Church Road, Ashford Town: Surrey County Council, to 10 October, then again on 16 October.
• Hillingdon Avenue, Stanwell South: Surrey County Council, now to 16 October.
• Fordbridge Road: BT on 5 and 6 October, then JSM Group, 7 to 9 October. Clockhouse Lane: JSM Group, to 7 October.

Sunbury, Laleham and Shepperton

• A308 Staines Road West, eastbound: closed overnight on 8, 9 and 10 October between Cadbury Road and The Parade, 8pm to 6am, for the cycle scheme. More below.
• Staines Road West (A308), Sunbury Common: Surrey County Council’s long-running permit, open since 16 March, ends 11 October.
• Escot Road right turn ban. Surrey made an order on 16 September banning eastbound traffic on the A308 Staines Road West from turning right into Escot Road, from 30 September, 24 hours a day, for an expected five weeks while a new pedestrian crossing goes in. The signed alternative is to carry on along Staines Road West and Staines Road East and come back.
• Kenyngton Drive: Surrey County Council, 5 to 12 October. Charlton Lane: traffic light refurbishment, 13 and 14 October.
• Laleham Road: Cadent to 13 and 23 October, and Surrey County Council at the Shepperton end, 12 to 14 October. Ruskin Road: Cadent, 11 to 27 October. Jamnagar Close: Cadent, 11 October to 15 November.
• Carlyle Road: Cadent, to 12 October. Avondale Avenue: Cadent, to 7 October. Meadway Close: Cadent, to 30 November.
• Batavia Road and Laburnum Crescent: Connected Kerb, to 8 October. Lower Hampton Road: Cadent, to 16 October. Kenton Avenue: Cadent, to 4 December.

The 20mph limit on eight roads in the Beechwood Avenue area of Sunbury is now in force: Ashridge Way, Beechwood Avenue, Bryony Way, Churchill Way, Kenyngton Drive, Keywood Drive, The Vale and Woodberry Close.

Gone since our last edition

These have finished and left the register since 3 October: Virgin Media on Kingston Road, Surrey’s minor works on Station Path, BT on Chestnut Manor Close, the earlier jobs on Oaks Road and Jordans Close in Stanwell, National Highways on Vicarage Road, Sunbury, and UK Power Networks on Ashford Road, Laleham. The A30 northbound closure to junction 13 on the night of 5 October and the M25 anticlockwise junction 11 exit closure have both run their course.

Surrey’s temporary bus changes page, read on 6 October, lists no closure anywhere in Spelthorne, which is usable evidence that no borough road is badly shut today.

Just over the border

Almners Road, Chertsey. Surrey made an order for twenty nights from 28 September, 8pm to 5am, closing the road from the former Lyne Crossing Road to Hardwick Lane. Chertsey is in Runnymede, about four miles south west of Staines, but the signed diversion runs along the A320 Staines Road, so it puts night traffic on a road plenty of people here use.

A30 Egham By-Pass. Surrey proposes to close the dedicated right hand lane where it feeds the A320 towards Chertsey and Thorpe Park, for five days in phases from 15 October. A proposed order is an intention, not a decision, and its dates can move. We could not find a later notice confirming it was made.

The A308 cycle route: night closures this week, the Black Dog section from 21 October

The big scheme in this borough is the A308 Staines Road West, the road that links the A30 and M25 junction 13 with the M3 and the A316. It carries most of the traffic between Ashford, Heathrow, Staines and Sunbury. Surrey County Council puts the scheme at £10 million, funded jointly with Spelthorne Borough Council.

The council’s scheme page, reviewed on 29 September and re-read on 6 October, gives two sets of overnight closures, both eastbound only, 8pm to 6am:

• 8, 9 and 10 October: the A308 between Cadbury Road and The Parade.
• 19 and 20 October: the A308 between Fordbridge Road and School Road.

The page does not give a diversion for either. The sections:

• Section 1, between the Fairways and School Road junctions, and Section 4, between the Shears and the Parade, are both due for completion by 20 October, weather permitting.
• Section 2, School Road to Ashford Road and Chertsey Road to Littleton Road, the Black Dog junction, is anticipated to start on 21 October and to take around six months. The council says the most significant impact will be the closure of Hughes Road at its junction with the A308, expected to stay in place for the entire construction period.
• Section 3, between the Black Dog and the Shears, was completed in January 2026.

Six months of works on the Black Dog stretch, with Hughes Road shut onto the A308 throughout, is the single biggest thing on this page for anyone who drives across the borough. The council says the A308 will remain a two-lane dual carriageway when all of this is done.

Parking: the tariffs are in, and three council pages still have not caught up

Spelthorne’s Off-Street Parking Places Amendment Order came into operation on 8 September 2026. We first reported the gaps in the council’s own pages five days later. We re-read Bridge Street’s page again on 6 October, twenty-eight days after the Order took effect, and it still has not been fixed.

The Order sets one short-stay tariff for Elmsleigh Road, Elmsleigh Road Multi Storey, Elmsleigh Road Surface and Riverside Surface, and one long-stay tariff for Bridge Street and Kingston Road. Both are Monday to Saturday, with £2 flat from 7pm to midnight and £2 all day on Sunday.

Bridge Street’s page is still wrong. On 6 October it was still last modified 12 August 2026 and still published the old long-stay ladder: £2.50 for two hours, £3.50 for three, £4.50 for four, £5.50 for five and £8 over five hours.

Every band from two hours up is understated, not just the commuter rate. The made Order puts Bridge Street on precisely the same schedule as Kingston Road, where the council’s own page, updated on 8 September, says £2.60, £3.70, £5.20, £6.00 and £9.00. Two council pages, one tariff, two sets of prices, six weeks apart. Read the tariff board at the machine before you assume either.

Four car parks became free, and none of them is in Staines

The same Order took four car parks out of the chargeable schedule and made them free parking places with an 11 hour maximum stay, from 8 September. They are Abbey Drive at Laleham, Dumsey Meadow at Shepperton, and the Old Bathing Station and Green Street at Sunbury-on-Thames, so none of them helps if you are parking in Staines town centre.

When we last re-read all four pages, on 3 October, nothing had been fixed. Dumsey Meadow, the Old Bathing Station and Sunbury Park and Green Street were all still last modified 11 August 2026 and all three still publish the old charges of £2 up to two hours and £4 over two hours. Abbey Drive’s page is still a 404. We have set that out in full in a separate report. If you use any of the four, read the signs at the car park rather than the website.

Sunbury’s other car parks are untouched by the Order. Thames Street and Orchard Meadow still give the first hour free, then £2 up to two hours and £4 all day, with a twelve-month local season ticket at £200.

Parking at the station

Kingston Road is the council car park closest to Staines station, with 196 spaces plus six disabled bays. It is now £9 for over five hours.

There is an oddity in its season tickets worth reading twice before you buy. A standard twelve-month season at Kingston Road costs £850. A twelve-month season for railway season ticket holders costs £900, and the three-month equivalents are £250 and £275. As published, rail commuters are charged £50 a year more than everyone else for the same space. The rail premium was still on the page when we re-read it on 3 October.

Expect diggers on Kingston Road itself: Virgin Media on 8 and 9 October at the Staines South end, then Surrey County Council highway works from 16 to 25 October.

What it means for you

Five things matter here, in the order they arrive.

• Thursday 8 October. Cadent starts on Guildford Street in Staines town centre, for a fortnight to 22 October. The same night the A308 eastbound closes between Cadbury Road and The Parade, 8pm to 6am, and again on 9 and 10 October.
• Friday 9 October, 8pm, to Monday 12 October, 5am. No exit from the clockwise M25 at junction 11, Chertsey.
• Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October. No trains at Staines. Buses run from Hounslow via Staines.
• Sunday 11 October, 10.30pm to 5.30am. The M25 clockwise exit at junction 13, Staines, is shut.
• From 21 October. Six months of A308 works on the Black Dog section, with Hughes Road shut at the A308 throughout. Before that, overnight eastbound closures between Fordbridge Road and School Road on 19 and 20 October.

Still running: the Escot Road right turn ban at Sunbury, for an expected five weeks from 30 September, and Affinity Water on Stanwell Moor Road to 4 December. And if you park in a council car park, Bridge Street’s own page still shows the old tariff. Read the board at the machine.

Where to check before you drive

Roadworks change weekly and no page can keep up with them, so these are the places to look:

• Surrey County Council roadworks in your area, filtered to Spelthorne, for anything on a borough road, which is most of what will delay you. On 6 October its forward view ran to 16 October.
• National Highways road closure report for the M25, M3 and A30, where most closures are overnight and lifted by the morning peak. The search box on the page can say “no results” when there are closures; the downloadable seven day spreadsheet is the reliable version. It is republished twice a day on working days.
• Public Notice Portal, traffic and roads for the statutory orders, which is where the Escot Road right turn ban and the Dane Road closure are, and where the council’s own roadworks pages are not.
• Surrey’s A308 scheme page for the cycle scheme’s overnight closures, which are on no roadworks list.
• Surrey temporary bus changes, which names diverted routes and unserved stops that no roadworks page carries. On 6 October it listed no closure anywhere in Spelthorne.
• South Western Railway planned improvements for the weekend closures. SWR renames and merges its month pages, so start from this calendar rather than a saved link.

The routes that decide your journey

M25 junction 13 is the borough’s front door and its bottleneck. It carries the A30 across the motorway between Staines and Egham, and it is the last junction before the M25 crosses the Thames at Runnymede.

M25 junction 12 is the M3 interchange at Thorpe, junction 14 is the Heathrow Terminal 4 junction at Stanwell Moor and junction 15 is the M4. That is the stretch that closes overnight most often.

M3 junction 1 at Sunbury is the borough’s other motorway access, and the one worth using for anywhere south or west rather than fighting through Staines.

Staines Bridge carries the A308 over the Thames in the middle of the town. There is no alternative crossing inside the borough, so anything that closes it sends traffic to Chertsey Bridge or Walton Bridge, both several miles away.

The ULEZ line runs along the borough boundary

Spelthorne is in Surrey and outside the Ultra Low Emission Zone. TfL’s own guidance is that the ULEZ operates across all London boroughs and the City of London, and the M25 is not in the zone.

That has a practical consequence here that catches people out. Heathrow is in the London Borough of Hillingdon, and Feltham and Hanworth are in Hounslow. Drive north or east out of the borough in a non-compliant vehicle and the £12.50 daily charge applies, 24 hours a day, every day of the year except Christmas Day. Drive south or west and it does not. The line is close enough to the middle of Ashford and Stanwell that plenty of local journeys cross it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the M25 closed at Staines?

Not the motorway itself, but the junction 13 exit is. On Sunday 11 October, 10.30pm to 5.30am, National Highways closes the M25 clockwise junction 13 exit slip road. The clockwise exit at junction 11, Chertsey, is shut continuously from 8pm on Friday 9 October to 5am on Monday 12 October, and the clockwise entry slip at junction 14, Stanwell Moor, closes on the night of Wednesday 7 October.

What roadworks are happening in Staines town centre?

The big one is Guildford Street, where Cadent has gas works booked from 8 to 22 October. Affinity Water is on the High Street from 11 to 13 October, Surrey County Council has minor works on London Road from 6 to 8 October and highway works on Kingston Road from 16 to 25 October, and Priory Green is booked until 13 November. The register gives dates, not whether a road is coned or on lights.

Is the A308 closed at Sunbury?

Overnight, eastbound only. Surrey closes the A308 eastbound between Cadbury Road and The Parade from 8pm to 6am on 8, 9 and 10 October, and between Fordbridge Road and School Road on 19 and 20 October. In the daytime it is open, but you cannot turn right off the eastbound A308 Staines Road West into Escot Road: Surrey made that order on 16 September, for an expected five weeks from 30 September. The Black Dog section of the A308 cycle scheme is due to start on 21 October and take around six months, with Hughes Road closed at the A308 throughout.

Are Staines trains affected by engineering work?

Yes, for most of October. The lines at Staines close all weekend on 10 and 11 October, 24 and 25 October and 31 October and 1 November. On Saturday 24 October an hourly Reading service still starts from Staines. The line from Staines to Windsor also closes on the five weekdays from 26 to 30 October. The only clear weekend is 17 and 18 October. SWR’s November page lists no further closures at Staines.

Which Sunbury roads are now 20mph?

Eight roads in the Beechwood Avenue area, each in full, from 28 September 2026: Ashridge Way, Beechwood Avenue, Bryony Way, Churchill Way, Kenyngton Drive, Keywood Drive, The Vale and Woodberry Close. Surrey County Council made the order on 22 September.

How much is parking in Staines now?

Since 8 September 2026, £1.40 for an hour and £12.00 for over five hours at the Elmsleigh car parks and Riverside Surface. At Kingston Road and Bridge Street it is £1.50 for an hour and £9.00 for over five hours. Bridge Street’s own council page has still not been updated and shows the old ladder, ending at £8.00. Thames Street and Orchard Meadow in Sunbury give the first hour free and charge £4.00 all day, and are not affected by the Order.

Is there free parking in Staines?

Not in a council car park in the town centre. The Order that took effect on 8 September moved four car parks into the schedule of free parking places with an 11 hour maximum stay, but all four are outside Staines: Abbey Drive at Laleham, Dumsey Meadow at Shepperton, and the Old Bathing Station and Green Street at Sunbury-on-Thames. Three of the four still publish charges on the council’s website, so check the signs at the car park.

Is Staines in the ULEZ?

No. Spelthorne is in Surrey, outside Greater London and outside the zone. But Heathrow, Feltham and Hanworth are all inside it, so a drive to the airport in a non-compliant vehicle costs £12.50.
